Honiss & Naomi Places: Building a Stronger, Safer Community

On a warm Friday evening late February 25, our neighbourhood held its second meeting since the initial gathering in October 2024. The first meeting saw a large turnout of neighbours coming together to discuss safety concerns following a series of burglaries in the area. This recent meeting, though smaller and more casual, was equally significant in fostering community spirit.

Despite the smaller crowd, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Neighbours were delighted to reconnect and continue building the relationships that began in October. These regular meetings, held every few months, are proving to be invaluable in helping residents get to know one another and form genuine friendships. This sense of camaraderie is essential for creating a supportive community where everyone looks out for each other.

One of the key topics discussed was the creation of a WhatsApp group to facilitate quick communication among residents. This group will enable neighbours to alert each other promptly if any suspicious activity occurs on the street. For those not on WhatsApp, the Street Coordinator has committed to keeping them informed via email or text messages.

These gatherings, sparked by the enthusiasm of one individual and supported by Cambridge Neighbourhood Support, are already showing promising signs of success. As the neighbourhood community grows stronger, we anticipate the formation of a thriving "street village" that offers numerous benefits to all who live here.

By coming together regularly, our neighbourhood is not only enhancing safety but also building a network of trust and mutual support.   Research has shown that social connections have significant health benefits, including reducing the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, anxiety, and depression[1][2]. Strong social ties can also lead to longer, healthier lives![3].

If you are interested in being part of a friendly and supportive neighbourhood and don’t know how to get started, call (021 266 9653) or email (info@safercambridge.co.nz) for Cambridge Neighbourhood Support.  We’ll be very happy to help you make this happen!  Our collective efforts are paving the way for a brighter, more connected future for everyone in our community.
