At the heart of Cambridge’s efforts to build a safer, more connected community is a team of passionate and experienced individuals who make up The Safer Cambridge Trust. Each one volunteers their time—bringing not only professional expertise, but also a deep personal commitment to the wellbeing of those who call Cambridge home. With backgrounds spanning education, health, finance, business leadership and more they share a united mission: to create a safer, more resilient community for all.
This month, we begin introducing just a few of the remarkable people behind the Trust, with more profiles to follow over the coming months. Each member brings unique strengths and stories that highlight the spirit of service at the core of the Trust’s work.
Ian Hughes has devoted six decades to the field of education—as a teacher, principal, and consultant, including time as Principal of Cambridge Middle School and Education Manager for Life Education New Zealand. His legacy extends well beyond the classroom, having contributed to the development of key community projects like the town’s swimming pool complex and pavilion, while also serving with various welfare and service organisations. These days, Ian remains an active presence at Lauriston Park and can often be found enjoying sports, reading, family time, and community life.
Helen Wallwork, the Trust’s secretary, brings a wealth of compassion and service to her role. Having moved to Cambridge in the early 2000s, Helen spent her entire professional life within New Zealand’s health sector, culminating in 25 years at Waikato Hospital. Now retired, she balances her community commitments with time spent with her grandchildren and beloved “grand dogs,” as well as her interests in biking, Pilates, bridge, gardening, and catching up with friends over coffee. Her dedication to the Trust reflects her deep-rooted belief in building a safe and resilient Cambridge across both rural and urban areas.
Tim Chapman joined the Trust as Treasurer in 2024, stepping in after the retirement of a long-serving predecessor. A Chartered Accountant in public practice, Tim is deeply committed to using his professional skills for good. His financial oversight helps ensure the Trust’s operations remain robust and effective, allowing staff and volunteers to focus on what matters most: making a real difference in the community.
Kelly Bouzaid is Chief Executive of the Cambridge Business Chamber, a role she’s held since October 2018 after relocating from Waiheke Island. Kelly brings to the Trust a vibrant mix of leadership and experience across a wide range of industries. She has served as National Sales Manager for several high-profile companies, General Manager of Touchdown Productions, and Sales and Marketing Manager for both the Waiheke Weekender and Gulf News. She also owned and operated Waiheke’s well-known Schooner Café. Known for leading and developing high-performing teams, and guiding organisations through change and crisis, Kelly brings valuable insight and energy to the Trust’s wider community efforts.
