Emerging Emergency Plan
Our visit last Sunday to the Robinson Street neighbourhood was a great example of what can happen when a community comes together with a shared purpose. A Trust member generously hosted the gathering in her own street, creating a relaxed, familiar setting for neighbours to talk about something that matters to everyone - being prepared for an emergency.
Bringing neighbours together
The turnout was small however people arrived ready to talk, share ideas, and think practically about what an emergency might look like for their street. The atmosphere was warm and collaborative, with plenty of conversation flowing between neighbours who already knew each other well.
Shaping a street‑specific emergency plan
The focus of the meeting was to begin shaping a customised emergency safety plan tailored specifically to Robinson Street. The group talked through what would actually work for their situations. This included discussing how much time they might realistically have to evacuate in different scenarios and what steps they could take now to make that process smoother and safer.
A practical exercise with a bit of fun
We had some light-hearted but meaningful conversation about what essential items to take if evacuation time was short, (as it usually is!). Neighbours compared ideas, challenged each other’s choices, and shared a few laughs as they weighed the importance of various items. The discussion naturally led into how neighbours could support one another when time is critical and the tools they could use to quickly check in with one another to make sure that no one is left behind.
Building readiness through connection
By the end of the meeting, the group had the beginnings of a clear plan and a stronger sense of how they could work together in an emergency. The conversations were thoughtful, constructive, and grounded in a genuine desire to keep everyone safe.
It was encouraging to see everyone so engaged, and it’ll be great to watch Robinson Street bring more neighbours on board as their emergency plan continues to grow over the next few weeks.
