A Night of Connection, Learning, and Lifesaving Skills in Our Rural Community
Last week’s rural Whitehall neighbourhood get‑together turned into one of the most valuable evenings we’ve shared for a while. It wasn’t just a meeting — it was a chance to reconnect, learn practical skills, and strengthen the bonds that make rural living special.
The evening began with relaxed conversation over hot soup and pizza. Neighbours mingled, caught up on local happenings, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of being in the same room again. That sense of connection set the tone for everything that followed.
Crime Prevention & Emergency Readiness
Our local Police shared practical advice on staying safe from crime in rural areas — tips tailored to the realities of long driveways, isolated homes, and the need to look out for one another.
We also talked about civil defence readiness: what to have on hand, how to plan with your household, and why rural communities need to be especially proactive.
🚑 3 Steps for Life: Lifesaving Skills for Everyday People
One of the most powerful parts of the night was the 3 Steps for Life training delivered by St John. This hands‑on session gave everyone the chance to learn — or refresh — essential CPR skills.
A few memorable takeaways:
CPR rhythm is easier than ever to remember. You can perform compressions to the beat of the Baby Shark song. The classic Staying Alive still works too, as does Dancing Queen.
You must press down much harder than you think. Most people were surprised by the depth required for effective compressions.
You must release fully after each downward push. Taking the pressure right off allows the chest to rise — a crucial part of keeping blood flowing.
We practised on a baby manikin. It’s everyone’s worst nightmare to imagine needing to do CPR on an infant, but even worse would be having no idea what to do. Practising the two finger or thumb technique gave people confidence they didn’t expect.
The room was full of determination, concentration, and a real sense of purpose. Some said it was the first time they’d ever tried CPR; others were grateful for a much‑needed refresher.
📣 Would You Like Something Like This in Your Area?
The success of this event has sparked interest in running similar sessions for other rural neighbourhoods. If your road, street, or cluster of homes would like:
a 3 Steps for Life session
a crime‑prevention talk
a neighbourhood catch‑up
or a civil defence preparedness workshop
…we’d love to help make it happen.
Let us know if you’re interested — these gatherings make our community stronger, safer, and more connected.
