The Great Neighbourhood Toilet Rescue
Neighbourhood Support is all about connection, safety, and looking out for one another — but sometimes that teamwork shows up in the most unexpected ways.
Recently, two of our Street Coordinators teamed up to promote connection and safety for their street. They held meetings and brainstormed ways to keep their neighbourhood connected and prepared. All very sensible. All very organised.
And then came the plot twist.
One coordinator had her lino replaced that day — which was great — except the toilet was out of action overnight. Completely unusable. No flushing. No negotiating. No chance of “holding on until morning.” And she couldn’t go far.
So what did she do?
She did what any well‑connected, community‑minded neighbour would do: she called her co‑coordinator.
Within minutes, a plan was formed. She packed a bag, put on her pyjamas, and marched across the street like a woman on a mission. A safe toilet awaited. A spare bed was offered. And the two coordinators ended up having an impromptu sleepover.
It was community resilience… with indoor plumbing.
Why This Matters (Beyond the Laughs)
This little adventure is a perfect reminder of what strong neighbourhoods make possible:
Connection means you can call someone when you’re in a bind.
Safety grows when neighbours know each other well enough to help.
Preparedness sometimes looks like a torch, a first‑aid kit… or a spare toilet.
When people build relationships before they need them, they’re better equipped for everything — from emergencies to unexpected bathroom renovations.
Your Call to Action
If you’d like this kind of connection (minus the midnight dash in pyjamas), consider becoming a Street Coordinator or asking us to work to connect your street block.
A strong neighbourhood starts with a simple step — and hopefully ends with everyone’s toilets working.
