Grab and Go: Could You Leave Home in 2 Minutes?

Prepare today, protected tomorrow

When an emergency happens, there often isn't time to stop and think about what to pack. In a house fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to get out safely. Other emergencies can also require a rapid evacuation. During Cyclone Gabrielle, some communities faced rising floodwaters, road closures, power outages and urgent evacuation warnings, leaving little time to gather belongings. That's why it's a great idea to have a grab and go bag ready. The good news is that you don't need to buy an expensive emergency kit or special backpack. A sturdy bag you already have at home will do the job. Simply add a few essential items and store it somewhere easy to reach.

Your grab and go bag might include:

  • Copies of important documents and photo ID

  • Essential medications

  • A phone charger or power bank

  • Torch and spare batteries

  • Water and snacks

  • Warm clothing and a rain jacket

  • Basic first aid supplies

  • Cash and personal hygiene items

And don't forget, emergencies don't always happen when you're at home. Severe weather, earthquakes or other events could occur while you're on holiday or heading away for the weekend. Having a grab and go bag ready means you can simply throw it in the car before you leave, giving you extra peace of mind wherever you are.

Not sure where to start? The Get Ready New Zealand website has an excellent checklist of recommended grab bag items and emergency supplies. [getready.govt.nz], [aucklandemergencymanagement]

Get Ready NZ:

Putting together a grab and go bag is one of the easiest preparedness steps you can take. A little preparation today could make a huge difference when every minute counts.
